Ex-cavalry officer Matthew Hanger is determined not to lose another family. He’ll get the job done and move on with his men. No roots. No emotional connections. No problem.
Until one of his men is shot and the doctor fixing him up happens to be a beautiful, intelligent woman with highfalutin words.
Dr. Josephine Burkett is nothing Matthew expected. As she digs her way under his skin and into his heart, he begins to wonder if roots are such a bad idea. But when she finds herself in trouble, the man who wanted nothing to lose will risk everything he has to save her.

My Thoughts:
Y’all, I read this book in a day. It’s that good. I’m convinced Karen Witemeyer can do no wrong. There isn’t a dull moment between the covers as this book hits the ground and takes off running from the very first page!
Matthew Hanger makes an excellent hero–flawed and honest and steady. And Josephine is just the right heroine to round him out–compassionate, sassy, and incredibly intelligent. The horsemen are so well-written, each with distinctive personalities but the same loyal hearts. I cannot wait to read their stories!
Matthew and Josephine both struggle with surrendering to the Lord in this novel–a struggle with which I’m all too familiar. At one point, Josephine prays, “I’m afraid, Lord. Afraid to completely surrender. Afraid that if I have no control over the outcome, it won’t end the way I desire.” It’s a prayer so similar to the ones I’ve uttered on countless occasions that I found myself nodding enthusiastically as I read the words. Yes. I’ve been there. And how wonderful to know that in fiction and in real life, God shows up in our surrender and works in ways that only He can.
Friends, I sighed. I grinned like a dork. I even teared up on occasion. This is just a good old-fashioned five-star read. Don’t miss it! It releases on June 2nd.
I’m so grateful to Bethany House Publishers and Karen Witemeyer for the complimentary copy of this novel. All expressed opinions belong to me.

Book Boyfriend:
All of the horsemen are dreamy in their own ways, but this is Matthew’s story and he shines. He leads his men, loves his Josephine, and fights for his cause in the same manner–with integrity and intention. His heart is golden and he’s not intimidated by a woman who can hurl ten-dollar words his way. What a hero!
